Welcome to Lucina Midwives. Our clinic is located in the beautiful Lucina Centre, in close proximity to the Misericordia hospital in the west-end of Edmonton.

The services for a registered midwife in Alberta are free. To apply for midwifery care, see the application form. Our registered midwives are university educated with decades of experience in Canada and other countries. The practice is currently involved in a research study on water births at the University of Alberta.

A midwife’s scope of practice is similar to a family physician but specialized in maternity and newborn care. Midwives can order/perform the same tests and do so after discussions of choices. Midwives are trained to handle emergencies in the absence of an obstetrician or pediatrician, though this is rarely required due to their ability to note early signs of potential problems. Our midwives have established good working relationships with physicians from referring city hospitals for seamless consultations and transfers. There is no provision for shared care with a physician unless a consultation is made, so all visits for mother and baby must be done with the midwife.

Midwives understand the importance of trust and the profound nature of welcoming a baby into one’s life. Midwives are experts in ways to have a healthy pregnancy, and in natural birth practices. They are skilled in helping a mother establish breast feeding and treating minor problems. Common practice includes protection of the perineum at birth, delayed cord clamping, and uninterrupted skin to skin contact between mother and baby after birth until baby has latched and begun feeding.

We look forward to meeting you and working together in fulfilling your wishes on this journey.
